FAQs – Application
Who can apply for a place in our childcare centres?
In general, our childcare centres accept children from students studying at one of the universities the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern is in charge of and, depending on the childcare centre, also children from employees of the LMU and the TUM, the HFF, the HM University of Applied Sciences and Weihenstephan Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences as well as employees of the Studierendenwerk and the supporting association Studentische Eltern-Kind-Initativen e.V.
From what age can you register your child?
You can register as soon as your child is born.
How old should my child be when starting at the Studentische Eltern-Kind-Initiativen e.V.?
Children can usually start in crèche after they have turned one, in a kindergarten after they have turned three.
Can I register my child for the waiting lists for the crèches/kindergartens even if I haven’t yet been enrolled at university?
You can, but when signing the contract, you require an up-to-date certificate of matriculation or else need to hand it in shortly after. When registering your child, you need to state at which university you are planning to be studying and also which course of studies.
How long will I have to wait until I get a place in one of the childcare centres?
The waiting periods differ depending on which childcare centre you registered for; however, you will usually have to wait for at least one year.
Is it a good strategy to only register for one childcare centre?
No, it isn’t. If you only register for one crèche or kindergarten, your child will also only be offered a place in this specific childcare centre. Your chances to receive a place in this childcare centre won’t increase by not registering for any other. Don’t register for childcare centres which would not work for you, for instance, because they are too far away.
Are there any disadvantages to register my child for the waiting lists of more than one childcare centre?
No, there aren’t. This will merely increase your chances to get a place as your child will be considered for free places in all the childcare centres which you ticked off. If you decide to only register for one crèche or kindergarten, your child won’t be offered a place in any of the other childcare centres.
You have registered and not heard back yet?
You will only hear from us if there are free places in a childcare centre and your child is offered a place. However, if you are worried whether or not we received your registration, you are very welcome to get in touch with our Advisory Service Studying with a Child to make sure.
How regularly do I need to confirm my registration in order to stay on the waiting lists?
You will receive an email once a year (in December) in which you are asked to confirm your registration; if we don’t receive your confirmation within the given time period, we will delete your registration.
If I accept a place in a childcare centre will I then remain on the waiting lists of the other childcare centres?
No, your registration will be taken off the waiting lists as soon as you have signed a childcare contract. Please also don’t forget that changing from one childcare centre to another can be difficult for your child.
You can’t find any phone numbers of our childcare centres? When can you have a look at our childcare centres?
Please understand that it is not possible for you to simply drop by in our childcare centres. That would disturb the children in their everyday routine. Please also refrain from calling the centre’s management. If you have any questions, you are always very welcome to get in touch with our Advisory Service Studying with a Child. Have a look at Our Childcare Centres for more detailed information as well as photographs of all our different childcare centres. There is also the possibility to have a look at our childcare centres at our information events. But we assure you that when you are offered a place, you will still be given the opportunity to have a look round the childcare centre, to talk to our staff and to then decide whether or not you want to accept the place.
