German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst / DAAD)
Read outThe most important place to turn to for students who are planning to study abroad is the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, DAAD). The DAAD is a joint institution of all German universities. Its goal is to further German universities’ international relations by means of academic exchanges of students and scholars as well as international programmes and projects. The DAAD therefore has a worldwide network of offices, teachers and alumni associations and also offers personal information and advice (overview of DAAD offices wordwide).
It considers itself an intermediary of foreign cultural policy, higher education and science policy as well as academic co-operation.
The most important functions of the DAAD:
- awarding scholarships in order to support studies abroad or academic research at university level to international and German students, graduates, trainees, young scientists and university teachers.
- supporting German scholars and teachers in all academic fields (including German language, literature as well as regional and cultural studies) to experience long- and short-term teaching positions at international universities.
- providing information on study and research options in Germany and abroad by means of publications and similar as well as offering personal information.
- supporting former scholarship holders, especially those abroad, through invitations and special events as well as programmes for supporting international students at German universities.
