ERASMUS

Most students know immediately what is meant when they hear the word 'Erasmus’ – studying abroad within Europe. Some might also think of Erasmus of Rotterdam, just as the founders of the programme were convinced that Erasmus, the humanist, would provide the ideal name for a programme that reaches out to connect universities within the European Union and other European countries, as well as to facilitate the mobility of students and academics. In 2007, the European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students, in short ERASMUS, had its 20th anniversary. About 1.5 million students have taken part in the programme since it was founded in 1987.

In order to help making the exchanges a successful experience, dedicated students take care of the international guests on a voluntary basis. The students are members of the Erasmus Student Network (ESN). This European student organisation's objectives are to motivate students to take a semester abroad, to welcome international students at their new destination and to make integration easier for them.

The Munich ESN section is called MESA. If you’re looking for more information on Erasmus or if you’d like to get to know other international students, this is where you can turn to.
