The German University System
Read outThere are several types of universities in Germany with different objectives and emphasis with regard to research, teaching, education as well as continuing education as described in the "Hochschulrahmengesetz" (legal framework for higher education) of the Federal Republic of Germany. However, the individual university regulations of the Länder often distinguish between different types of universities and lay down their functions.
In general, a distinction is made between the following types of universities:
- universities and technical universities
- universities of applied sciences
- universities of the arts

- ecclesiastical universities
- private universities
