Cultureclubbing goes Lenbachhaus & Bahnwärter Thiel
As part of cultureclubbing and in cooperation with the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern, the Lenbachhaus is going to present the work of Joseph Mallord William Turner in its full breadth. The Lenbachhaus Kunstbau will be opening its doors exclusively for students for the exhibition "Turner. Three Horizons", showing his pictorial innovations with roughly 40 paintings as well as 40 watercolours and sketches from all parts of his oeuvre.
Followed by a party “Tanz der Kollektive” with DJ-Crew of Ultraschall-Kollektiv in the Bahnwärter Thiel – and, as always with cultureclubbing, free for students!
Joseph Mallord William Turner is up until today considered a revolutionary who helped pave the way for modernism. Colour attained a hitherto unseen freedom in his pictures. He began exploring the possibilities of landscape painting early on. He experimented with conventions, integrating natural science, myth, history and contemporary issues. Gradually, he pushed the boundaries of traditional representation. Soon his works loosened the bond that tied them to nature as it appears to the eye to such a degree that, in their reduction to colour, light, and atmosphere, they called the picture’s representational function into question. His art amazed contemporary beholders and sparked controversy. Posterity has celebrated his prodigious modernity.
